the ongoing saga of Papa Mali, a touring musician and defender of mystic truths and fables, both modern and ancient.
It's that holiday time of the year, and if I manage to survive the commercial hype ( I always do) I hope to pull it all together during the final hours of Dec 24, and have myself a merry little Christmas ( I always do). But this year, as you are trimming the tree (or lighting the Menorah), consider if you will, the Mardi Gras Indians of New Orleans, who will also celebrate Christmas, and then get right back to sewing their magnificent suits, each one different than the year before, each one resplendent in it's exotic plumage, detailed beadwork, bright, shiny jewels. Christmas may be upon us, but Mardi Gras mornin' soon be comin'...and every spyboy, flag boy, wild man, squaw and big chief gonna be sewin' night and day as Fat Tuesday draws near. Big holiday shout out to my injuns! Ho, Ho, Ho and Hoon Don Day! Merry Christmas and My-Ti-Coo-Ti-Fiyo! Mysterious Forces salutes the Mardi Gras Indians, in all their magnificent supernatural splendor! |
...from astute reader, Bonafied Tom: "I learned this at least, by my experiment, that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundry; New universal and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with the license of a higher order of beings. In proportion as he simplifies his life, the laws of the universe will appear less complex, and solitude will not be solitude, nor poverty poverty, nor weakness weakness. If you have built castles in the air your work need not be lost, that is what they should be. Now put foundations under them." -Henry David Thoreau I love this quote, and it exemplifies the outlook which I tried to define in my opening entry (Answering the Call...) Of course, I will be writing about all kinds of subject matter which is less cerebral and more down-to-earth. Who knows what I may feel like gettin' into on any given day? Record collecting? Probably. Food? Likely. Fishin'? Maybe. Music? Definitely. Life on the road? Most assuredly. But, I always want there to be an angle that makes you think, ponder and wonder. If natural is good, then supernatural must be even better, right? |
I never could get behind religious minded individuals who would seek to discredit me and my beliefs. Once a particular faith gets too organized, they usually begin looking for folks that they can convert to their own doctrine. And frankly, I am suspicious of any organization that wants me as a member, and I am even more suspicious of any individual or group who thinks they have 'The Answer'. And I will be the last person on this beautiful earth to try to convert you to my way of thinking. Learn to forgive and love yourself so that you may truly forgive and love others. Accept and give love as often as you can. Forgive those who truly don't deserve it. Keep an open mind (read this one as often as necessary). Seek out your true self and honor it's existence by being the best 'you' that you can be. Be kinder than you are required to be to children, animals, sick people, the elderly and the poor. Honor the dead by learning from their mistakes and carrying on their good deeds, especially those traditions which uplift, bring joy and comfort to those that they leave behind. Read more books. Listen to what others have to say. Do not judge others - the laws of nature (and karma) will take care of that. Do what you know is right. Don't take me, these words or yourself too seriously. Lighten up. Laugh more. |
Greetings, my friends and fellow seekers, and welcome! 'Mysterious Forces' is my latest undertaking: a blog, journal, a travelogue, a sometimes skewed look at everyday situations, epic experiences and minor events through my own unconventional perspective. I hope you will join me, as I wax philosophical, spout off rants and musings, talk about whatever happens to be on my mind and try to find some meaning, understanding, common ground and humor in the world we share. |
In the coming weeks and months, I will be talking about records. Records that I collect. Records that I would like to collect. And definitely records that I LOVE to listen to. Mostly vinyl records, 45s and LPs, but if I dig it, it can be recorded on an old cassette tape and I'll write about it. Hee hee...well, uh..of course...not YOUR band, dear reader. But this is precisely why my thousands of old vinyl records give me so much pleasure. They don't sound like anything I can go out and hear at my neighborhood tavern or find on modern television. They come from a different era (mostly 1930s thru 1970s in my case, and especially the '60s and early '70s). The scratchiness seems to enhance my listening pleasure, as I drift back to a time when all I had to worry about was where my next record was coming from. I love lifting the needle on to the groove. I love holding the sleeve in my two hands, staring at the artwork, re-reading the liner notes and singing along in my head to the lyric sheet. I love making mixtapes ( or mix CDs...I swear, even CDs sound superior when they are burned from a vinyl record!) Heard any good records lately?
